Good Scenes in Bad Movies: The Creature Wasn't Nice

In this section, we provide clips...or rather, we provide links to clips that other people have provided, on YouTube.

The two clips below would seem to be, by common consent, the only two funny scenes in the comedy, The Creature Wasn't Nice. Each features Patrick MacNee of The Avengers fame.

The Creature Wasn't Nice (1983) was supposed to be a musical spoof of such science fiction movies as Alien and It! The Terror From Beyond Space - in the vein of the Mel Brooks spoofs where it is supposed to be taken seriously in it own right, with the humor arising out of the situations.

According to its script writer, director and song writer, Bruce Kimmel, it was destroyed, first when he brought in a film editor who wasn't very good at his job. Then, when he lost control of the picture, the producer brought in other people who recut it, gave it the wrong kind of music, and so on, and then promoted it as a kind of Airplane laugh-a-minute film, which it was not meant to be.

Reviews of the movie certainly pan it, yet it seems to have achieved cult status (along the lines of Plan 9 From Outer Space - so bad its good.

Bruce Kimmel, scriptwriter, and songwriter (he wrote the song the creature sings..I'm pretty sure he sings it as well) is the individual on the far right of the screen in the clip above.

Today, he is a successful producer of soundtracks for Broadway musicals, under the Kritzerland label.

Read his story of the destruction of The Creature Wasn't Nice (also known as Spaceship and Naked Space at: Kimmel's blog.

Kimmel is also a playwright and in 2006 wrote The Brain From Planet X, a science fiction musical. It proved to be moderately popular, and will be produced at various venues throughout the country in years to come.

Below on the right the opening theme song for the musical, which shows Kimmel's familiarity with the 1950s SF movie genre. (We haven't seen the play, but this opening song, at least, is pretty coo-el!)

(On the left, Cindy Williams gives a good, old-fashioned 1950s SF movie scream.)
