BLOTS ON THE LANDSCAPE Page 3

Notes written April 25, 2006, Tuesday
No photos to upload today. Tuesdays are 'groundskeeping' day - a small army descends on the community and does ground work including picking up litter. If they didn't...well, this area would probably look just like any other community that can't be bothered to pick up its own trash.

Why do some people litter? Found one answer today. I did a search on Yahoogroups to see if I could find any anti-litter groups to join, in which I could show off these anti-litter pages. To my surprise and dismay, I found one group called the LitterClub, which actively promotes littering. Apparently it's a festish for some people, and others - on this list at least - do it because they like to do it, and encourage others to do so as well. Scary. If anti-littering laws were ever enforced, one wonders if they'd keep on doing it...or confine their thrill to littering their backyard where other people don't have to look at it.

Earth Day Comes Once A Year or Appearances Can Be Deceiving

I've uploaded 10 photos today. Each piece of litter is perfectly framed and in perfect focus, but that's not why I've uploaded so many. It's in commemoration of the fact that yesterday was Earth Day.

When I began my first bike ride of the day, I began on the path that circles around the townhome community grounds. I was quite surprised to see...no litter. Not a single piece. After this I biked onto the road that leads up to the "main drag," and for the first several yards there was no litter here, either!

"What's going on?" I'd thought to myself. "Could Earth Day volunteers have made the rounds of the grounds yesterday and picked up all the litter?" But then, a couple of yards further on, I found that I'd been totally mistaken.

Tenth blot on the day's landscape. On the left hand side of this charming gurgling brook,
there's a plastic bag caught on a rock.
