Virginia Historical Road Markers Photos uploaded April 23, 2006 Start in Newport News, and get on George Washington Memorial Highway (also known as Highway 17), heading towards Yorktown. You'll pass a blue sign bidding you farewell from Newport News, and within a few yards you'll come across an historic marker identifying the beginning of York County. The marker below was erected on this site in 1946 (according to the sign). It's impossible for motorists to get a view of it - if they slow down to read it they'll get another car up their bumper. But pedestrians and bicyclistts can walk past it.
