Retirement Ceremony

When a sumotori retires, the retirement ceremony takes place on the dohyo (for those whose career warrants it). Here former Ozeki Kirishima, the highest ranked sekitori in the Isutzu heya - run by Terao's father, retires, and Terao is one of many people who cuts off a bit of his chon-mage (Sumo top-knot).

Kirishima's retirement took place many years ago. Kirishima took over as oyakata of a heya.

When Terao's brother Sakahoko retired, he took over as oyakata of Isitzu heya, and ran it for a few years. When Terao retired, he briefly became oyakata of Isitzu, before opening his own heya. Sakahoko now coaches at Isitzu again.

There is a website in French devoted to Kirishima.

The retired Terao and his son attending the danpatsu shiki of Hoshitango, one of only two Jewish Argentinian sumotori (the other being his brother), and cutting a bit of his chon-mage - or sumo hairstyle.

Hoshitango never managed to get into the maegashira ranks, so did not have a ceremony at the Kokukigan. The ceremony in this cases is held in the heya.
