Humboldt Squid

Return to: It Came From Beneath the Sea Sourcebook Index

The octopus and the squid are cousins, both belonging to the class called Cephalopod. There are many different species of octopi and squid, ranging in size from a foot in length to almost 60 feet (including the arms...or in the squid's case, tentacles).

The squid has eight arms, and two tentacles. The octopus has eight arms, and no tentacles.

The squid's body contains a cartilaginous skeleton which stiffens it into a cigar-shape, while the octopus has a soft body with no cartilage.

They are both carnivores, and have mouths in the forms of beaks (resembling parrot's beaks) made of chitin, which they use to tear up their prey.

They both swim in a 'jet-propelled' fashion, expelling water from their mantles to move in a particular direction.
