BLOTS ON THE LANDSCAPE I live in a middle class neighborhood of townhomes in York County, Virginia. The homes jut up against man-made ponds, and there's a bit of a forest obscuring a river on one side. It's a beautiful setting. The grounds are kept immaculate by hired groundskeepers who come every Tuesday to mow the lawns, prune the public flower beds, and do whatever else it is they do. But from a couple of hours after they've gone...until the next Tuesday...ah, there's the opportunity for litter to flourish! I bike through this area every day, and not a day goes past where I do not bike past garbage - from candy wrappers and paper cups and bags from fast food restaurants to beer bottles. Most of it is on the sides of the roads leading to and from the development, but there's also plenty to be found in the development itself. Why do people litter over such beautiful scenery? Well, perhaps to them it looks pretty.
April 19, 2006: Norfolk Botanical Garden. The whole place was immaculate, until we walked around Lake Whitehurst. Someone just couldn't stand to carry this bottle any longer.
