I asked Mr. Veidt why Jew Suss, made by Jews for Jews, wasn't the success it promised to be. He sighed. "Ah," he said, "There was a picture. Took a lot of money at first, and then.... The Jews didn't like it. Why? Maybe because I'm a 'goy'. I don't know. But my Jewish friends told me it wasn't that. They say it was because in these times, it is bad policy to make a picture that tackles or emphasizes racial differences. The Jews are too deeply concerned with the persecution question that has troubled the world for the last few years to patronize pictures that deal, however sympathetically, with the problem."
