Max was the perfector of rotoscope animation, used in the Superman animated movie shorts made in the 1940s. (He was also the creator of Popeye).

His main claim to fame was as Pa Cartwright in Bonanza, but then he took the role of Adama on Battlestar Galactica from 1978-1979. He was also in Galactica 1980.
