March 27, 1964: Friday. A little after 5:35 PM. An earthquake hits Anchorage and other cities in Alaska. All along the coast, port towns suffer great damage, in particular Seward.
In the Gulf of Alaska, a region the size of Maine lifted three to eight feet. Part of an island rose 38 feet. The town of aldez found itself 10 feet higher than it had been. Kenai Peninsula moved sideways as much as 60 feet and sank seven feet or more. Near Valdez a piece of land 4,000 feet long and 600 feet wide fell into the ocean.
