LeVar Burton was born on February 16, 1957 in Landstuhl, West Germany (where his father was stationed in the Army).

His first claim to fame was as Kunta Kinte in Roots but as far as science fiction fans are concerned, he is Geordie LaForce of Star Trek: The Next Generation He has also written an SF novel, Aftermath.
