Jim Baen: Publisher
October 22, 1943 - June 28, 2006
Jim Baen worked his way almost from the bottom to the top of the publishing business – his first job was in the complaints department of Ace Books. He became editor of Galaxy magazine in 1973. When he returned to Ace, now under publisher Tom Doherty, he was put in charge of the science fiction line.
Baen went to Tor Books when it was founded by Tom Doherty. Once again Baen was in charge of the science fiction line, and he purchased its first 170 titles. In 1984 Baen founded his own independent company, with the assistance of Simon and Schuster. In the last 22 years Baen developed the company into one of the premiere science fiction and fantasy publishing businesses.
Baen suffered a massive stroke on June 12, 2006, and never recovered consciousness, passing away on June 28. He is survived by two daughters, Jessica Baen, 29, and Katherine Baen, 14.
The surviving partners of Baen and his heirs intend to continue Jim’s legacy of innovative, independent publishing.

Tim Hildebrandt: Artist
January 23, 1939 - June 11, 2006
Tim Hildebrandt, born on January 23, 1939. was the twin brother of Greg Hildebrandt. They worked as a team for several years - illustrating children's books and record album covers. In 1975, they responded to a request for artists who would like to draw a Lord of the Rings calendar for Ballantine Books. They received the commission and did three calendars for Ballantine. Then they wrote and illustrated their own fantasy epic Urshurak.
In 1977 the Brothers Hildebrandt created the original Star Wars movie poster, which spread their name far and wide. They split up in the 1980s, however, each pursuing their own career. In 1992 they became the Brothers Hildebrandt once again, and continued doing commercial art and paintings of fantasy and comic book heroes.
Tim Hildebrandt’s later life was beset by ill-health, and he recovered from a couple of strokes before dying of diabetes at the age of 67.
